Bacterial Vaginosis

What is Bacterial Vaginosis?

Once upon a time I was diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis. And then I came to acquire knowledge on BV and I now know enough that I can share with you. I am an ordinary person, and not a medical professional. I have read up the Internet while I was struggling against my own bacterial vaginosis, and have my own experience to rely upon, right from being diagnosed, running from pillar to post, and finally getting cured using a natural remedy. To me, my experience is valuable and I share it here.

Bacterial Vaginosis is a bacterial disease that affects the vagina of the women. This is found most commonly in women in their childbearing age. Also known as BV, bacterial vaginosis is often known to recur and antibiotics are well-known to fail to produce permanent cure to this anomaly quite frequently. This bacterial infection is caused by an imbalance of bacteria in the female vagina, leading to disbalance in pH factor (acid-base balance) inside the vagina. Some people also refer to this as bacterial vaginitis and vaginal bactereosis.

The human vagina sees a balance of good and bad bacteria, and bacterial vaginosis happens when the bad bacteria (anaerobes) outgrow the good bacteria leading to problems. In fact, contrary to the popular belief that yeast infections are more common, more than half of vaginal infections among women at a given time could be caused by bacteria rather than yeast. In other words, many times women think that they are infected with yeast while the reality is that they are infected with bacterial vaginosis.

The fact that not one but multiple species of bacteria are responsible for bacterial vaginosis makes it a tough challenge to solve permanently. It is often observed that antibiotics provide temporary relief to the problems but the symptoms keep coming back after a temporary improvement.

The fishy, foul odor coming out of the vagina is the most striking symptom of BV. It is usually accompanied by a bacterial discharge, burning, itching and pain. It can also cause infection in the bladder, uthrera and the skin around the genital area. The detailed primary and secondary bacterial vaginosis symptoms can be found here.

There can be multiple causes behind BV. One of the popular beliefs is that it is sexual. While that is true in some cases, but in general bacterial vaginosis can occur due to other reasons too. The core of the problem lies in disbalanced pH inside the vagina, leading to disbalance in the desired levels of bacteria inside the female reproductive canal. Menopause, thongs and anemia are known to cause BV. Here is more information on causes of bacterial vaginosis.

BV can lead to long-lasting serious problems if it is not treated. The right treatment can quickly cure the problem, but if not treated then it can inflate the risk of getting one affected with Pelvic Inflamatory Disease (PID), cervicitis (at the uterus orifice) and endometritis. Bacterial vaginosis during pregnancy adds to the complication, and one may stand at the risk of facing undesirale pregnancy outcomes.

To summarize, bacterial vaginosis (BV) is an infection caused by high increase of bad bacteria. The causes are still under debate, but the core disturbance happens when the pH balance in the human vagina is not at the desired level. This is very much curable with the right treatment - in fact some of the best natural remedies can quickly arrest and cure the problem. BV is a disease that is known to recur and become chronic in spite of being treated, but one suffering from this condition should not lose heart. Getting started to work on eliminating bacterial vaginosis early is the best option to prevent future complications.

Women suffering from the chronic form of bacterial vaginosis have been best able to cure their problems altogether using natural remedies including herbal methods.
